Report, Reflect, Resolve: Shaping Inclusive Spaces for Patient and Caregiver Voices in Healthcare Decision Making

Presented by: Dr. Ambreen Sayani & Alies Maybee

Power imbalances significantly shape the processes and outcomes of patient engagement, often hindering equitable participation in healthcare decision-making. This session introduces the Power Wheel, a tool designed to identify, reflect upon, and address power asymmetries within the 'places' and 'spaces' of patient engagement. By applying the Power Wheel framework, participants will explore concepts of 'power to,' 'power over,' and 'power with,' and their implications for patient partnership in healthcare. Through real-world examples and an interactive discussion led by Dr. Ambreen Sayani and Alies Maybee, attendees will learn practical strategies to recognize and mitigate these power dynamics, fostering meaningful engagement and promoting health equity.

The objectives of this seminar are:

  1. Distinguish between 'power to,' 'power over,' and 'power with' in the context of patient engagement and describe how these concepts relate to the involvement of patient partners in healthcare decision-making.
  2. Understand the relationship between ‘place’ and ‘space’ as they relate to decision-making power.
  3. Learn how to use the Power Wheel as a tool to report, reflect and resolve power asymmetries as they relate to equitable patient engagement.
