2024 NHP Summer Research and Training Program
Applications to the 2024 program are now closed.
The Network for Healthy Populations is dedicated to training and preparing the next generation of health leaders to address the rising risk and burden of diabetes and chronic diseases.
Program Objectives:
- Gain research experience, knowledge, and skills to prepare for future career goals
- Participate in education and professional development opportunities available via the Network and across the UofT campuses
- Network with mentors and experts from the field and seek guidance and mentorship on career goals
- Connect with other trainees who are interested in reducing social inequities and addressing the root cause of diabetes and related chronic diseases
Who should apply:
Applicants who are:
- Currently enrolled in a University of Toronto program (until August 31, 2024), as an undergraduate, medical school/health professional student or non-thesis graduate student
- Interested in gaining research experience, knowledge and skills to prepare for careers that aim to reduce the risk and burden of diabetes and related chronic diseases
- Interested in networking with peers, mentors, and subject matter experts
- Legally able to work in Canada
- Available to participate full-time (36.25 hours/week) from May 6- August 23, 2024 (MPH Students) or June 3- August 23, 2024 (MD/undergraduate students)
- Able to work in-person and virtually, as needed (research teams are based in Toronto and Mississauga)
- Able to meet in-person weekly (dates and times TBD) for networking, mentorship, and knowledge exchange opportunities
- Please note, students selected into the NHP summer program cannot participate in other summer training programs.
How to apply:

Applications to the 2024 program are now closed.
- Review the list of projects for your program stream and select a maximum of two projects that best align with your interests and skills
- Complete the appropriate program stream Google Form application, and attach the following documents:
- A one-page letter of intent (maximum 500 words) for each project you are applying for
- Unofficial copy of your most recent university transcript. This will only be used to assess eligibility to be selected for the program
- An updated CV
Program Streams
Please select the program stream based on the status you will have at the University of Toronto until August 31, 2024 and follow the outlined instructions to submit your application.
Please note: Undergraduate Medical students may also apply through the undergraduate stream. However, you can only select a maximum of two projects across both streams.

Review & Selection Process
The following steps will be taken to review and select applications:
Eligibility screening: Applications will be reviewed and will be rated for alignment between the applicant and the selected project.
Interviews: Top applicants will be invited for an interview.
Reference Check: Selected candidates will be asked to provide contact information for two references.
