Ana Giceva is a third-year student at the University of Toronto Mississauga pursuing a Biology Specialist and a minor in science, business, and entrepreneurship. This summer she worked with the nationwide Urban Trails research team on their project called ESCALATE (Essential Conditions for Canadian Leisure and Active Transportation Effectiveness), to provide results specific to Mississauga. The project aims to identify factors of urban trails that promote active transportation through a mixed methods approach. Ana had the privilege of working with the team to collect field surveys from trail users at 12 sites across Mississauga, amounting to over 300 responses. These findings will be part of a nationwide meta-analysis to guide the design of safe, accessible trails that support community health and help lower the burden and risk of cardiometabolic disease.
