Empowering Communities: Locally-Driven Research and Partnerships in Peel Region and Beyond
On June 9, 2025 the Novo Nordisk Network for Healthy Populations hosted its second Discovery Day: Empowering Communities: Locally-Driven Research and Partnerships in Peel Region and Beyond.
The event, which brought together more than 100 people, featured updates on the Network’s Catalyst Grant program, as well as a keynote presentation, poster sessions and networking opportunities.
The day kicked off with a keynote session from Dr. Tamara Dubowitz, Chair and professor of the University of Pittsburgh School of Public Health Department of Epidemiology. Dr. Dubowitz shared updates on a suite of National Institutes of Health-funded studies that looked at how neighbourhood investments and changes—including the opening of a full-service supermarket in a food desert, housing and greenspace improvements, and commercial development—have impacted diet and food purchasing, physical activity, sleep, cardiovascular health and cognitive outcomes. This insightful session inspired many questions and a lively discussion with the audience.
An interactive poster session provided attendees with an opportunity to learn about ongoing research being supported by the Network, and each of the 2025 Catalyst Grant award winners gave a short presentation about their projects. A panel discussion about the 2024 Catalyst Grant awardees allowed for more detailed observations from each project as they move closer to the end of their funding period.
During breakfast and lunch networking breaks academics, students, community group staff, local politicians and representatives from partner organizations had the chance to discuss their ongoing work with the Network and learn about relevant initiatives.
The day ended with small-group sessions to discuss, share and catalogue relevant projects and initiatives happening across Mississauga and Peel Region.
Participants left the event with increased understanding of community-based health initiatives and current and future research projects being supported by the Network. Many expressed that the day’s activities left them inspired to begin or continue collaborating on projects focused on addressing local health challenges.
We’re already looking forward to next year’s event.
