Everton Smith is a second-year medical student at the University of Toronto. His research focuses on centering the voices and experiences of Black, African and Caribbean caregivers to develop type 2 diabetes (T2D) interventions. Through a scoping review, he is helping map the existing evidence on community based and family focused T2D interventions. Additionally, he has been supporting the development of a framework to meaningfully engage and build longitudinal relationships with community organizations. Going forward, the research team will be hosting knowledge exchange workshops within the community utilizing photovoice to hear from those with lived experience. The aim of the project is to co-design community-based interventions that lead to the creation of more equitable and inclusive approaches to T2D prevention.
