Ghazal Kazem

Ghazal Kazem is a second-year medical student at the University of Toronto Mississauga. Through the NHP summer program, she worked at the Improving Cancer Care Equity Lab at Women’s College Hospital. Her research focuses on evaluating the readability, understandability, actionability, and health content of web-based patient education materials on cervical cancer screening through an equity lens.

She conducted qualitative data analysis using tools such as Flesch-Kincaid, PEMAT, and health content analysis to assess the readability, understandability, actionability, and accessibility of the materials. In addition, she worked with patient partners to identify gaps between the cervical cancer screening services available and the needs of the populations, helping prioritize patient-centered improvements.

The methods applied in this project can also be used to analyze patient education materials for other chronic conditions, such as type 2 diabetes. Moving forward, her findings will contribute to the development of guidelines for organizations to create patient-friendly educational materials. These guidelines can be adapted to other chronic conditions, including type 2 diabetes.
